Otago Harbour
The Otago Harbour is a long, crooked body of water with the Otago Peninsula on one side and the main body of the South Island on the other. Dunedin city is sited at the end of the harbour, and suburbs meander down both sides of it. There is a dredged channel bring ships to Port Chalmers (the port suburb of Dunedin) and the shallow waters which form the greatest part of the harbour are a great place to sail. There are many small bays and coves and a great variety of birdlife. Seals, sealions and several species of penguin, are common. Orca and Southern Right Whales are occasional visitors. This place has been important to the region's inhabitants for many centuries and I am proud to call it home.
